Q&A with Kitsuné Music's Gildas and Masaya

This one's pretty self-explanatory...
Kitsuné Music's founders, Gilas and Masaya, answered some questions we've been dying to ask the finger-on-the-pulse electronic/dance/pop record label and fashion company.

Be prepared for utter enlightenment...

Kitsuné formed way back in 2002. How did the label come together? What was the catalyst that led to its creation?

A trip to japan we took, Masaya and I. Japan is the country for us. People there love clothes, music and [that collective] image; we love music and we love clothes. [We wanted to] do a brand that would do both. The Japanese aren’t afraid of that kind of concept and definitely we weren't wrong because Japan is the country that has worked the best for us!

Why choose the Japanese word for "fox" for the company?

Kitsuné is a nice creature that protects a temple and has the power to change his appearance; Kitsuné as a brand is also like that… we are always changing faces…

What's the concept behind your compilation series? I love, for example, how they all have the same piled-on illustrations of featured artists and never cease to showcase fresh, new, and upcoming talent as opposed to older and staler stuff. Additionally, how do you decide who to add and what the final tracklist will be?

Our Kitsuné Maison compilations are club [records] to be listened to at home or, conversely, home compilations to be listened to in clubs. We like to give little new acts a chance and also propose great club musics and songs… [so] our compilations are full of pop songs. We create nice packaging to not [scare off] our nice customers.

What's it like living and working in Paris? From the U.S. standpoint, we assume you're all having parties every night and hosting shows DJ'd by some of the most talented folks in the world. Is this the case? Furthermore, do you think that the copious attention France's music scene has received is a positive or negative thing (personally and otherwise)?

Paris, as you know, is the most beautiful city in the world, so living and working in the city is great. Not so sure about the great parties, but lots of good clubs are working well now here... the attention given to French music is super positive; lots of press and media focus on one movement brings attention and new fans and that’s good for everybody in the music scene here! We'll see [how long that will last]. And while we ourselves are based in France, we feature on our compilation acts from many, many countries.

How do you discover bands (i.e. Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya)? Do they come to you? Do you have scouts looking for people to sign?

So far I've [Gildas] been doing far all the scouting got the music label. Some artists come to us, yes, and some I personally get in touch with. We are quite established now as music labels go, so managers, bands, etc. know us and [understand] what we are able to do.

Since Kitsuné Music was formed, there has always been your Kituné fashion label. Sort of unusual for a record label... any reason? Background story? Or do you just like making clothes?Who should we be keeping an eye (and ear) out for? Any recommendations straight from the desks of Kitsuné's founders?

AutoKratz, Cazals, and Ted and Francis (our Maison 6 compilation!)

Outside of fashion and music, what else is Kitsuné involved with? You did that Club BoomBox mix, for example ... anything else?

We did a music compilation called Kitsuné BoomBox which was related to a really cool London night also called BoomBox.

Additionally, we’ve had our new store in Paris for a month now (52 Rue de Richelieu 75001 Paris) in which you can find our all products—clothes, music, etc.

Lastly, why do you think it is that Kitsuné has rocketed to such success and acclaim? Is it your approach to marketing? The label's stellar roster? Please explain your thoughts on why you're so appealing and embraced by so many…

We create good products, music, and clothes and we are ever mindful to [release only the best quality stuff] through Kitsuné!
