Vital Stats: Mountains

Text: Nik Mercer

Brooklyn's esoteric ambient rock duo, Mountains, is releasing a new album, Choral, on February 17. We briefly caught up with them for their vital stats. Grab a sample MP3, "Choral," to get a 12-minute dose of their soothing heaviness.

BAND NAME: Mountains

HOMETOWN: Brooklyn, New York

DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN TWO SENTENCES: Heavily layered melodic textures. Guitar oriented Compositions.

FAVORITE NIGHTSPOT IN THE CITY YOU CALL HOME: K+M Bar

THREE BANDS OTHER THAN YOUR OWN THAT YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT: Magnolia Electric Company, Dinosaur Jr., Pram

MOST HORRIFIC STAGEDIVING (OR CONCERT) EXPERIENCE: We played a show in Belgium with Supersilent and Alog and right before we started playing I lost all power to my gear and had to play an impromptu acoustic guitar set.

FAVORITE CUISINE TO EAT ON THE ROAD: Grocery store sandwiches.

TOUR NECESSITIES YOU NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT: Air mattress.

DESCRIBE WHAT YOUR STUDIO RECORDING/CREATIVE PROCESS IS LIKE: Usually we improvise together and come up with ideas, then slowly refine them until we have several parts of a set worked out. Then we practice those and find a good order for them. We always record our practices and sometimes use those recordings on our albums, or build songs around them.
