Gary Panter, notoriously known at the "King of the Ratty Line," creator of the bizarre anti-hero/Cro-Magnon Jimbo, and set designer of Pee-Wee's Playhouse (as well as sometimes Philippe Starck collaborator and commercial illustrator), has a awesome show opening today (April 4) at the Clementine Gallery in New York City.
While Panter debuted as a punk comic artist and underground author, he has slowly moved into the world of "fine art" over his thirty-year career. Now he teaches at the School of Visual Arts and pursues painting first, comics second. We couldn't be happier, either, considering that his wacky, off-kilter works are quite a pleasure. They're explosions of color, layered upon grungy, meticulous pen-and-ink drawings and fat brush strokes. The aesthetically pleasing counterpart to some of his earlier, darker, and denser works.
Additionally, Panter has a stunning new book out on PictureBox Inc. (it's huge).
For those of you who missed our interview with Mr. Panter, head on over here to check it out!
