Anthem Recommends: Final Fantasy, "Spectrum 14th Century"

Text: Nik Mercer

Classically-trained, RPG-obsessed Canadian pop music innovator, Owen Pallett, has one hell of a resume. His debut record, Has A Good Home, was an impressively accessible nearly-solo effort that the violinist followed up with an even more impressive (and substantially denser) sophomore release, He Poos Clouds. Now, Pallett and his talented music conservatory cohort (including Beirut's Zach Condon) are back, prepping for what will be the most lyrical and complex Final Fantasy LP to date.

But before that unnamed record hits stores in 2009, the Final Fantasy crew is whetting our appetite with a couple of EPs: Spectrum 14th Century (out now on Blocks Recording Company) and Plays to Please (also out now on Slender Means Society). Both are clearly indicative of new waters for Final Fantasy: "The Butcher" (download or stream it here) is a soothing, strings-driven ballad; "Oh, Spectrum" is a showy introductory song with bizarre rhythms and clashing chord progressions; "Cockatrice" is a more distant and mystical tunes―and we've not even gotten into the other EP!

So: buy the records and hold tight until more Final Fantasy news arises in the coming months.
