Now Let's Learn Our ABC's

Text: Nik Mercer

Children's books are never an especially fun thing to buy: they're either too petty for parents or too unnecessary for the little toddlers themselves. The experience of buying and reading such volumes is humiliating and embarrassing both for the adult parent and the I-don't-know-what's-going-on tyke.

Every once in a while, though, a nifty addition to the kiddie library pops up, and we're pleased to present you with '09's first two entrants: M Is for Metal and Never Mind Your P's and Q's (note the hipster references). Both are penned by Paul McNeil and Barry Divola and will be available in March through Sound Screen Design, an NYC-based company that normally doesn't cater to adolescents of any variety.

Metal and Never Mind both aim to teach your kids their ABC's through orthodox mechanisms which intriguingly incorporate unusual subject matters. Two examples: "J is for Jimi, an experienced guy. He can play with both hands, his teeth and one eye"; "C's for Clash with a strummer called Joe. They're playing tonight, should I stay or should I go?" Growing up, the Anthem crew only knew that "A" was for apple and "B" was for bear, but we never heard of this highfalutin Jimi or Clash―and we definitely didn't know to never mind the bullocks―so all we can say is that we envy the children of '09 and wish them the best.

Pick up both books over at Insound, Sound Screen Design's parent company, and catch some previews right here.
