The Making of "L.E.S. Artistes"

Text: Nik Mercer

It's easy to scoff about a "Making of the [insert innocuous music video]" because―well―they're not quite films! Usher's new video for "Love In this Club" all but sent the world into a massive spree of Usher fanaticism, but who would actually want to check out the "making of" segment? Nothing would happen! Usher might complain about it being too hot under the spotlights, a light bulb might burn out, an intern might collapse from the strains of being on set... but it's not like a feature-length film's being shot!

That being said, "The Making 'L.E.S. Artistes'" weirdly redeems the crummy music video. Here's a rundown of the scenes: (1) Santogold on a horse, looking stupid, thinking, "gah, this dust is getting in my eyes!, (2) Santogold walking in super slow-motion through a city street filled with cadavers and dying people, all of whom have bizarrely constructed and colored insides (i.e. tomato belly girl), (3) ominous Ghost Busters-esque slime trickles diagonally across the screen, and... that's it! Really stupid!

But, but, but―the "making of" clip makes it better. See, Santogold, the extras, the director, and his crew were all suffering for their art out there! Everything went wrong! It was really, really cold (and, to make matter worse, got "even colder"), an orange paint bomb explosion malfunctioned, and... man... that wasn't a real horse to begin with!? Check out the mini-documentary right here (or right above this block of text). You really will learn to enjoy the actual music video a tad bit more.
